One of Coca-Cola’s new bottling plants was featured on National Geographic Channel’s Ultimate Factories Series. Ryson’s Vertical Spiral Conveyors were shown in the packaging process of both the bottle and can lines.

Machines in this modern Coca-Cola bottling plant pump out almost 800 bottles per minute and cans are filled at an astonishing rate of up to 1,700 cans per minute in a process more complex than meets the eye. Maintenance and down time is costly to the company when it interrupts production. That is why top quality equipment like Ryson Spiral Conveyors are finding their way to the most modern and efficient plants in the world.

Fridge packs are a perfect application for the Ryson Case Spiral, as shown in this brand new Coca-Cola bottling plant.

You can view all segments of National Geographic – Ultimate Factories Coca Cola here. The Ryson Case Elevator on the bottling line is featured in Part 2 (4 minutes in). The spiral conveyor moving fridge packs are featured in part 3 (at 2 minutes). There are 8 Ryson Spirals installed in this modern bottling plant, moving cases, trays and fridge packs from packaging to palletizing areas. This plant is near Baton Rouge, LA and the systems integrator on the project is Sentry Equipment.

This is an impressive new plant and Ryson International is proud to have vertical conveying solutions there and in many of the top branded packaging companies in the world. Ryson New Years Graphic

As this year comes to an end, Ryson can look back at 2010 as a very productive year. Our new products are getting great reviews and our service department continues to receive kudos. We have also been pleasantly surprized by the number of re-purposing projects we have implemented throughout the year. Our customers have come to realize that Ryson Spiral Conveyors can be economically re-configured to adapt to production or packaging line changes.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our customers and associates for all their business and support during 2010 and look forward to continued success in the coming year.

Ole B. Rygh

President and CEO.

Many of our customers have found that the Ryson Spiral Conveyors can be reconfigured for less than the cost of a new spiral. The proprietary modular design of the Ryson Spiral Conveyor allows us to change the configuration so the spiral can serve a new purpose.

Ryson Spirals are easy to Reconfigure

Ryson's proprietary modular design allows a spiral to be reconfigured.

In the photos above, one of our Systems Integrators – Stokes Material Handling – had us reconfigure a spiral that was to be installed in a updated palletizer line for his customer Colgate Palmolive. After the spiral was delivered, their customer purchased a different palletizer than originally planned, requiring a different configuration and the addition of an extended in-feed. Since the unit had not yet been installed, they decided to have us do the modification in our manufacturing plant, instead of in the field, but reconfigurations in the field are the most common.

In this case, the spiral went from an A model counter-clockwise down spiral with a 7′-0″ elevation change  to a BC-EX clockwise down spiral with a 6′-1″ elevation change and an extended in-feed. Repurposing is one of the many reasons we call our spiral conveyors green and sustainable.

The Ryson spiral can operate bidirectionally and becomes an efficient dynamic accumulation buffer when used in conjunction with a pick-n-place robot.

Ryson Spiral used for dynamic buffering

Ryson Spiral Conveyor used in a Dynamic Buffering System.

In the sample above, two conveyors run side by side and parallel to the spiral in/outfeed conveyor. One conveyor handles products from the filler and the other convey empty cases. A Delta pick-n-place robot located in front of the spiral loads products into the empty cartons or feeds the spiral when needed. The spiral conveyor provides vertical accumulation and buffers any imbalances in the flow of products or supply of cartons. The spiral is reversible and accumulates products during over-supply and purges during times of under-supply, where the robot will load the cartons directly from the spiral. This dynamic buffering system compensates for intermittent operating interruptions and significantly improves overall production efficiency.
