This week Ryson conducted a FAT (Factory Acceptance Test) on eight hybrid spirals going to the clean room of a large personal care product company.

Ryson Hybrid Spirals to be used in a clean room

These are part of a large order of stainless steel hybrid spirals conveyors going to a plant where cleanliness is critical.

These are the first 8 units of a fourteen spiral order. They will handle small packages at high speeds… up to 200 fpm. This project has strict requirements for cleanliness and reliability.

The customer FAT took place during the course of a day and included recording motor and gearbox temperatures at one-hour intervals and amperage readings throughout the day.

The Ryson Hybrid Spiral is a cost effective solution, where the side guards and structure is made of stainless steel, but the center tube is powder coated extruded aluminum.

Warehousing and order-picking operations often handle larger and heavier loads of varied sizes.  It is an ideal application for Ryson Spiral Conveyors.

Space Saving Ryson Spirals at Distribution Center

When considering square footage in a large distribution center, the Ryson Spiral Conveyors can be space saving, and can maximize the area for storage and pick module locations. Since the spirals convey straight up and down, they can be placed at the end of a pick line to help create a cleaner more efficient layout and can even help create aisle space.

In the order-picking operation shown to the right, our integrator partner Dematic Corporation, designed a distribution center with several muilti-level pick modules, all connected with space-saving Ryson Spirals.

The conventional inclines and belt curves that would be needed to elevate totes and cartons in this end-of-aisle pick module layout would have taken much more floorspace. It would also cost more in implementation and field wiring because of multiple bed sections, motors and control devices. Plus it would cost the end-user more every month in energy bills.  Compare one spiral motor to six powered conveyor bed sections, and you’ll see why Ryson Spiral Conveyors help lower the total cost of ownership.

Ryson Spirals With LegsSometimes Ryson Spiral Conveyors require extended legs to support the machine. This is common when a spiral feeds an overhead conveyor through the floor above or in distribution centers and warehouse facilities where multiple level mezzanine structures are used.

The Ryson engineering team is happy to work with our Integrators to furnish the spirals with extended legs to support the machine. Ryson fabricates custom support legs in a modular panel design to allow for easier shipping, handling and egress to the installation area.

In the project pictured here, the support structure enabled totes to decline from pick level 5 to pick level 4, then from pick level 3 to the 2nd level. Our Systems Integrator on this project was Abel-Womack. Tall Ryson High Capacity Spiral Conveyor

Some Ryson Spirals are too tall to test run inside our factory and must be stood up outdoors.

Ryson Spirals Save Space. With the multiple entry spiral conveyors in a multi-tiered order picking system, that space savings is multiplied.

This week we are shipping a 30 foot tall high capacity spiral which will be installed in a four-level order picking system at a new grocery distribution center in North Carolina.

Totes and full cases are delivered from all four pick levels to this single spiral. At each level, a high speed induction conveyor will provide controlled entry to the spiral. The load is then conveyed  at 150 feet per minute down to the floor level where the orders are consolidated prior to shipping.

The induction conveyors have individually adjustable belts to match the spiral conveyor pitch.

This solution not only provides considerable space savings, the customer also benefits from optimal operating flexibility with less equipment needed. The system integrator on this project is Intelligrated.

Installing Tall High Capacity Spiral

Installing a tall Ryson High Capacity Spiral Conveyor in a distribution center in Australia.

Four high capacity spiral conveyors are currently being installed in a large distribution warehouse for electronic products in Austrailia. These spiral elevators will service several order picking levels. The Tallest spiral feeds in product at 2′ – 6″ and discharges at 29′ – 0″. The Ryson High Capacity Spiral Conveyors easily handle the tall height requirements with only one drive. The 24″ wide slats will be able to handle loads with variable sizes and weights. There is also an intermediate high-speed induction conveyor at the 12′ – 6″ elevation to accommodate an additional order picking level with the same spiral conveyor unit. The induction conveyor adds additional operational flexibility and reduces the number of vertical conveyors required.

Two-Ryson-Spirals The Ryson Spirals are very easy to install and most spirals are shipped in one piece, pre-tested which drastically reduces the time and cost of installation.  These spirals were loaded fully assembled into 40′ containers and shipped as ocean freight to Australia. A member of our service team traveled down under to supervise the installation and provide maintenance training to ensure the longevity of the vertical conveyors. The integrator on this project is Bastian Material Handling.

Proper integration and maintenance assure long life of Ryson Spirals. That is why we welcome and encourage our Systems Integrators to send their installation team leaders to our plant for intensive training on the installation, integration and maintenance of our spiral conveyors. Preventative maintenance and integration tips that can save time and money in the future are presented. Our professional service team walks visitors through critical points of our spiral machines. We show the basics of preventative maintenance, how to shorten the chain and replace broken or worn parts. Integration tips like speed matching and ideal gap between loads are also covered.

Service Training on The Ryson Spirals

Our PMMI Certified service manager trains an Integrator's technician on proper spiral maintenance on a mass flow spiral.

This week, a member of the Storcan Conveyor and Packaging Systems team (Montreal, Canada), gets briefed on the proper rigging and installation of a mass flow spiral that we will be shipping to their customer, a brewery that will use the spiral to transport full 12 oz. glass bottles at 800 per minute through an elevation change of 15 feet from the client’s first to second floor. This project also includes one of our new high capacity case handling spirals to lower the full cases back to the first floor for palletizing.

Our service manager is a PMMI certified trainer and feels the more familiar everyone is with the Ryson Spiral Conveyors — and how to best keep them running, the better it is for everyone. That’s why we feel this is a worthwhile investment in time. It  reinforces our committment to quality and service.

If you would like to visit our plant, get the tour and familiarize yourself with the Vertical Conveying Spirals, we welcome you. Call us at 757-898-1530 for more information or to set up a time.

tall ryson Stainless wash-down SpiralA 22 foot tall stainless steel washdown Ryson Spiral Conveyor is in the process of being installed at a major food manufacturer in Michigan. The spiral is 8 1/4 turns and will convey single serve microwavable meals down from a spiral freezer in a single file to a packaging line at floor-level.

This application offers substantial savings compared to conventional spiral freezer methods. Products are conveyed down to floor level on the outside the freezer. This design allows the cost savings of both a smaller freezer and only having to use one up spiral freezer. Traditionally, a larger freezer would be required to house a a pair of the more expensive freezer spirals.

All Ryson Spiral Conveyors are made to order and are manufactured in a wide range of sizes and configurations. All our vertical conveyors can operate up and/or down in a clockwise or counterclockwise rotation. All Ryson Spirals are available in powder coated carbon steel, stainless steel, washdown, stainless hybrid and freezer versions.

The integrator on this project is Selectpack out of Michigan.

Ryson Dual Track Spiral ConveyorRyson recently hosted a Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) for Gonnella Frozen Food Products, Inc. The Systems Integrator Thomas Conveyor Company approached Ryson  with an interesting challenge: To replace two existing case elevators with one Ryson Dual Track Spiral Conveyor in a very tight space.

Ryson Dual Track Spiral Conveyor Shipping

Due to tight installation space, the Ryson Dual Track Spiral Conveyor had to be partially assembled on location

The spiral itself is 18 feet tall and has 6 1/2 turns. At the FAT, the spiral was fully assembled, and running test product. Ryson Spirals normally ship in once piece, but this spiral had to be partially disassembled prior to shipping in order to be installed in a very restricted space. The old case elevators were ripped out, and the new spiral installed over a weekend.

The new Ryson Dual Track Spiral Conveyor is the ultimate in space savings.

Two tracks operate independently within one spiral structure. Both slat conveyor tracks can go up or down, and can optionally be reversible. The Dual Track Spiral Conveyor is an ideal solution when space is an important issue. Visit the Ryson Dual Track Spiral Conveyor page on www.ryson.com to get additional information. You can also view more application stories about the Ryson Dual Track Spiral Conveyor on our weekly blog. Below is some video footage from the FAT in our manufacturing plant in Yorktown, Virginia.

Since their induction close to two years ago, the Ryson High Capacity Spiral Conveyor has taken off.

Ryson High Capacity Spiral Conveyor

High Capacity Spiral in a Packaging Line

Once the benefits of our heavy hitter were realized, their demand has increased dramatically. The high capacity spiral conveyor came about primarily because our customers needed to move heavier loads and go higher.  The 1 inch chain that moves the slats is  heavy duty, allowing for a capacity of 75 lbs. per linear foot of conveyor for speeds up to 200 FPM. The total weight capacity in the spiral at any one time is 3600 lbs.

Only one drive motor is required, resulting in substantial savings in energy, controls and system integration. Ryson Spirals are designed for low maintenance and long life. An innovative modular design allows Ryson to customize with ease and modify in the field to accommodate emerging needs. Download the Ryson High Capacity Spiral Conveyor Spec Sheet here.
