Factory Acceptance Test of a Ryson Dual Spiral Conveyor

Going over the Ryson maintenance manual during the FAT of a Ryson Dual Track Spiral Conveyor

This week we hosted another factory acceptance test (FAT) for The Jelly Belly Candy Company of Fairfield, California.

Our Systems Integrator, Sierra Conveyor Co., Inc, designed an upgrade to the Jelly Belly case conveyor system that delivers product to their robotic case palletizers.  The new system uses a high speed lane divider prior to the spiral conveyor to automatically meter cases to one of the dual spiral’s lanes. This will help to balance the product flow to the three palletizers, speeding up their packaging lines.

The new spiral conveyor will also save floor space by replacing conventional incline conveyors. When the incline belts were worn, cases would often slide backwards. With the experienced Ryson engineering team, the spiral’s incline angle and built-in friction surface was designed to ensure the correct orientation and smooth transportation of the Jelly Belly cases through their 10 foot elevation change.

The spiral will also be prominent on the Jelly Belly factory tour, so your can see it run if you decide to visit. Stay tuned on more details and video on this project once the line is installed.

Ryson Reconfigure Spiral ConveyorIn the spring of 2003, Ryson International manufactured a spiral conveyor for a large coffee retailer distribution center. They needed to incline cases and totes between levels of a pick module.

Nine years later, the end-user asked their conveyor integrator: Conveyor Handling Company to re-design their system. A spiral would be needed to decline with different elevation parameters and speed. With Ryson’s proprietary modular design, repurposing an existing spiral is easy, and considerably less expensive than the cost of a new vertical conveyor.

The old spiral was shipped to our manufacturing plant and was reconfigured. We are preparing to ship it back to be installed in their new system layout — At a fraction of the cost of a new spiral.

Spiral Repurposing with RysonWhat sets Ryson apart is that our modular designs allows for our customer’s spirals to be re-purposed to fit new line layouts. Many of these spiral reconfiguration projects are made in the field by our technicians, most of the time over a weekend.

Repurposing a 9-year-old spiral speaks volumes for the longevity and durability of our spiral conveyors and how we can lower the cost of ownership for our clients. Call the Ryson sales team if you think an existing spiral is a good candidate for reconfiguration.

Ryson Dual SpiralThe Dual Track Spiral Conveyor from Ryson is the most efficient way to convey vertically in a very small footprint. It can be used to vertically double the volume or to elevate two product lines within a single unit.

The Dual Track Spiral pictured to the right is part of an installation at a brewery. If you look closely at the two tracks you’ll notice they are running different package lines. This allows cartons to run up beside cases for example. This has the potential to simplify and reduce product flow in the palletizing area.

In addition to slat width flexibility of two parallel tracks, the lanes of the dual spiral can operate independently and can convey up or down, and can optionally be reversible.

Below is a video of a Ryson Dual Track Spiral Conveyor that is featured on our YouTube Channel. If you would like additional information on our proprietary dual track spiral, you can download the spec sheet here.

Tall Case Spiral that Spans 3 Production Floors Here is a great example of how a single Ryson Spiral Conveyor can span multiple levels of production.  This tall down-spiral collects cases from the third floor production area, and conveys them through a hole in the floor towards the ground level. On the second floor, an induction conveyor merges cartons from the second level production area into the spiral. The conveyor then drops through the ceiling to an over-head conveyor system on the first floor which brings the mixed product cases to a sortation center and palletizer.

Ryson Induction Conveyor

A high speed induction conveyor introduces the cases from the second level production lines.

The system has the ability to convey product from all production lines from levels two and three down to the palletizing level with a single spiral. This application saves valuable floor space and reduces the need for multiple vertical conveying systems.

Ryson’s sister company, Apollo BV – based in Holland, implemented this spiral application at a household plastic manufacturing plant in Nothern Germany.

Mass Flow With Lane Divider

High Capacity Mass Flow Spiral Conveyor With Lane Divider to Run Two Production Lines at the Same Time

This week we shipped one of our new high capacity mass flow spiral conveyors with 20″ wide slats to Lindy’s Italian Ice’s production facility in North Carolina. The spiral will convey cups of Italian Ice from a spiral freezer down to the floor level.

This application is interesting in that the cups come out of the freezer with two different flavors at the same time, which need to be conveyed in separate lanes. The two lanes are fed on to the spirals’s extended infeed which is equipped with a center lane divider ensuring separation of the two flavors in the spiral decline. The products are then discharged from  both sides of the spiral’s extended outfeed and conveyed to separate cartoners.

This spiral freezer and associated mass flow vertical conveyor enabled the customer to increase the production rate drastically. By using 2 lanes within one Ryson Spiral they also significantly reduced the cost of equipment.

Because of the size of the 2300-500 model high capacity spiral a stepped-deck flatbed trailer was used to ship the spiral. One of our Yorktown-based technicians met the trailer at it’s destination to supervise the unloading and set-up of the spiral, which took a day and a half.

The 20″ wide  slat mass flow model can handle capacities up to 2,000 bottle cans or jars per minute are also available in powder coated carbon steel, stainless steel and washdown versions. For more information on Ryson’s High Capacity Mass Flow Spiral Conveyor, please visit www.ryson.com. Our integration partner on this project was Garvey Corporation.

Tall Ryson High Capacity Spiral Conveyor

In the shop this week we are finishing a tall high capacity spiral conveyor. The HC 1700-400 (16″ wide slats) is going to a large consumer products manufacturer in Mexico. The spiral will become part of a system where products from 9 different packaging lines are conveyed overhead to an adjacent building. The spiral then declines variable sized packages 28 feet down to floor level at a speed of 200 FPM. From there they go to sortation and palletizing prior to shipping. The integrator on the project is C & A Systems out of Mexico.

The robust high capacity design gives Ryson the ability to go taller – and with more weight, while staying with our proven proprietary modular design. The total weight capacity in the spiral lift at any one time is 3600 lbs. Only one drive motor is required, resulting in substantial savings in energy, controls and system integration. Most models are shipped totally pre-assembled, which will minimize the implementation costs at their destination.

Tall Ryson Dual Track Spiral Conveyor

This week Ryson shipped a tall dual track vertical spiral conveyor. This substantial 6 1/2 turn down-spiral will convey shrink-wrapped six-pack and two-pack gallon jugs from an in-feed height of 19′ – 1″ to an out-feed height of 2′ – 10″ at floor level. Both the inner and outer tracks feature a 16″ wide slat.

The integrator on this project is Pacific Packaging Systems, for a large dairy plant in Utah. The space to decline the two high volume packaging lines was so limited, the dual spiral was the only viable option.

Two spiral conveyor tracks operate independently within one vertical conveying structure, making the Ryson Dual Track Spiral Conveyor the ultimate space saver.

Since being introduced to the market some 18 months ago, the Ryson High Capacity Spirals with multiple infeeds have been installed in distribution centers and packaging lines all over North America.  The multiple entry spiral conveyor is truly a viable and cost-effective solution for multi-tiered product flow.

Heavy Duty Multi Infeed Spiral Conveyor

We recently were approached by our OEM integrator, JEM International – of Shawnee, Kansas to elevate 40 lb. paper bags of a powdered pharmaceutical additive from two lines. The first line feeds in at an elevation of 1′ – 6″ and the second line feeds in perpendicular to the first line at an elevation of 2′ – 0″.  The outfeed is at 16′ – 0″. The challenge was that the customer only had space for one spiral conveyor after the filling operation. The Ryson solution included a high capacity spiral conveyor with an additional floor level induction conveyor.

The Ryson Spiral conveyor can be manufactured to operate in a freezer environment down to -30 degrees. The spiral conveyor is a logical choice for declining frozen product to a robotic palletizer or downstream packaging line. When compared to other methods like belt declines and vertical case lowerators, the Ryson Spiral design is very reliable for this harsh environment.  The blue slats are a proprietary compound developed by Ryson to operate in low temperatures and not be brittle.

Ryson Spiral Conveyor with Freezer Slats

Ryson Spiral Conveyors can be configured to operate effectively in freezer environments.

We recently shipped a special cold spiral for handling large tubs of Ice Cream in a freezer (minus 10 degrees F) at a large Ice Cream manufacturer in the Midwest by our Systems Integrator, Engineered Packaging Systems of Addison, Illinois. The above photo was taken in our manufacturing plant during testing prior to shipping. This spiral joins many other Ryson spirals in use in sub-zero environments across North America.
