Smooth Product Handling: This week we shipped two model 2300-400 spirals to a specialty packaging manufacturer. This spiral model is typically used for high volume mass flow of glass bottles and cans, but because of this special application, we substituted our mass flow slats with our standard carton and case (overlapping-style) slats.

The customer needed to incline stacks of bliss box ends at 90 fpm with no orientation change and without shingling. Because the stacks were not strapped together, a delicate ride and a low angle of incline was required for smooth product handling.

Pre-testing of the various products was done at our Yorktown, Virginia manufacturing facility and it was ultimately determined that this wide-diameter model would work perfectly for their application. Our chain and overlapping slat design allows smooth transportation of the stacks at around a 3.8 degree inclination angle.

One of our field technicians will be on-site in the coming weeks to assist in the re-assembly and start-up of their system.  For more information on special applications solutions, visit www.ryson.com, or browse through our weekly blog.

Last week we conducted a factory acceptance test (FAT) on 4 spiral conveyors going to a large food manufacturer in Eastern Virginia.

The plant already has 12 Ryson Spirals in operation and the new spirals are part of a current plant expansion. The FAT was also a learning opportunity for the attending maintenance personnel. The bonus was a history lesson and partial tour of the Yorktown Battlefield conducted by our service manager and history buff – Doug Glass. The customer was very appreciative and dropped us this note (reprinted with permission)

Ryson Factory Acceptance Test and a History Lesson” Thanks for the tour yesterday, it was great to see the conveyors being put together. … . Thanks also for the historic tour and a great lunch, I may be taking a day trip to Yorktown for the fourth of July now!

(I’m) Happy to report the first two spirals have been unloaded, and the second two if not already, should be arriving shortly…”

Thanks,

Jake Cohen, Project Delivery Engineer

We are always proud and happy when our customers provide such satisfied feedback. We also thought is was a very nice segue to wishing you a very safe and happy 4th of July from our manufacturing plant near Historic Yorktown.

Simplify Installation Challenges: Ryson recently worked on a project where spiral conveyors were built to the customer’s approved specifications only to discover that the interior door openings in the facility were too small to fit the pre-assembled spirals through.

Ryson Modular Design Simplify Installation

The Ryson Modular Design allows flexibility in configuration and installation.

The Ryson modular design saved the day.  After building and testing the units in our Yorktown manufacturing plant, we were able to partially disassemble the machines. allowing them to pass through the smaller doorways and be reassembled once in the installation area. Customized shipping frames were also designed and built, as the both the height and width were smaller than the preassembled spiral’s dimensions.

On another project, the spiral conveyor could only get to the second floor installation area through the facility’s fright elevator. The Ryson design team modified the spiral’s shipping frame to prevent having to disassemble the spiral.

It is always a good idea to double check your clearances before having a spiral conveyor shipped, because unless otherwise specified, most models ship fully assembled, minimizing installation time.

Ryson is always willing to work with the customer on solutions to solve layout and installation challenges. The proprietary modular design allows flexibility and can easily be reassembled on site will relatively little effort on site if the need arises. Ryson offers video factory acceptance tests (FAT), or sample product handling videos for our customers and systems integrators. This courtesy is part of our ongoing commitment to customer satisfaction and application testing. The FAT videos are created at the customer’s request before shipping from our manufacturing facility in Yorktown, Virginia.

In this video, a case of similar size and weight to the customer’s is filmed running on their spiral to ensure it’s being handled properly without change in orientation at the specified speed of 140 FPM. The Spiral here is a High Capacity spiral with 16″ wide slats and will handle cases of varied sizes with weight up to 40 lbs.  The video also features a start/stop test to amplify the orientation trials. The end of the video also highlights areas of interest from a maintenance point of view or any custom features.

The Ryson High Capacity Spiral Conveyor load capacity is 75 lbs. per linear foot of conveyor with speeds up to 200 FPM. The total weight capacity in the spiral at any one time is 3600 lbs and can start and stop fully loaded.

Ryson International, Inc. was honored with the Stephen T. Capo Employer Of The Year Award this year.

Ryson Receives Hampton Award

Annette Lyons, Ryson’s Supply Chain Manager Accepts the special award – Photography by Henry – Mattie and Henry Stovall

The award honors a local business that has done the most to enhance the employment of people with disabilities within the past year. Ryson  outsources certain assembly work to Eggleston Services, an organization that empowers people with disabilities to work.

Eggleston employees insert rubber friction inserts into the slats used in the Ryson Spiral Conveyors.  Almost all of the Eggleston employees have been trained to prep slats and 14,000 are assembled each week.

This year, Eggleston started the assembly of T-bolts and nut assemblies as well as chain bags which are used with service chain in the field. Eggleson employees have visited Ryson’s manufacturing site, to see how the carriers and slats fit into the incline conveyors.

It is a rewarding win-win opportunity and we look forward to contunuing this meaningful relationship. Visit Eggleston Services for more information on their valuable program. Visit www.ryson.com for more information on how our spirals are made in our manufacturing plant in Yorktown, Virginia.

Ryson Hosts an Unleash Small Business Forum

This week, former Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez held an “Unleash Small Business Event” at Ryson International. Gutierrez spoke with close to 100 small business owners about Romney’s plan to support small businesses, strengthen the middle class and how to champion manufacturing jobs and bring them back to our shores. He also spoke about the need to change burdensome regulations and reform the tax code to create millions of new jobs.

Mitt Romney will champion small business and return America to the best place to start a business or hire a worker. He is committed to reforming the tax code, ensuring trade works for America, and cutting our nation’s deficit.” – Former Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez

The event was politically motivated, but the message was clear – Small business is the engine driving our economy, and it was appropriate to hold such an event at Ryson – one of Yorktown’s largest manufacturing plants. As a convenient service to our customers and systems integrators, Ryson offers video FATs (Factory Acceptance Tests).  This is an effective and efficient way to see and approve the spiral conveyors running prior to shipment from our production facility in Yorktown, Virginia.

In the video above, a customer wanted to see “worst case scenarios” for their product line. Ryson ran damaged packaging and performed start/stop tests to ensure product orientation and stability. The video also highlights components of the spiral’s construction to help orient the customer when the spiral arrives.
Ryson also offers product testing for customers having questions on how their specific product would convey on a Ryson Vertical Conveyor. Simply send samples and we will videotape your product on one of our test spiral conveyors and send you a private and secure link to watch on YouTube.
