Integrator Cooperation on a Mass Flow InstallationIn the next few weeks, our integrator partner Sentry Equipment will be installing one of our Mass Flow Spiral Conveyors at a major brewery. The Spiral will handle many different product sizes, so the transitions on and off the spiral will be critical for it’s round-the-clock peak performance. 

At our integrator’s request, and to ensure the side-transfers are installed and integrated correctly, we’re shipping the spiral’s in and outfeed extensions to Sentry directly. This allows them to connect their adjoining conveyors and fit their guide rails in their shop environment. By doing this in their shop, it gives them the opportunity to fine tune the transitions offline and streamline the mechanical installation of the spiral and the side transfer guide rails.

The rest of the spiral sub-assemblies will ship directly to the brewery where the complete line will be assembled. This will reduce the time for installation and assure the spiral will have the line-flow up and running in the shortest amount of time.

This Mass Flow Spiral (Model 1900-400) will handle up to 1,400 cans/minute. It is one of our new hybrid stainless steel wash down-duty machines, using the solid lube bearings. These bearings allow daily cleaning with harsh detergents.

The Ryson Narrow Trak Spiral is ideal for a high speed inline bottling operation. Due to it’s modular design, it can be configured to the most challenging layouts. We also have the flexibility to build a spiral in sections to address tight egress installation challenges.

Ryson Narrow Trak Spiral aids in Tight Egress InstallationThis week we shipped a spiral that is a perfect example example of tight egress installation . Due to plant and line access issues, the spiral has to travel down an aisle-way only 42” wide. This required us to design the spiral such that it could ship in (4) sections (note the flanges in the center tube). This Narrow Trak Model 1100-150 spiral is for our Integrator Partner, Sentry Equipment, to be installed at a west coast bottler, running sports drinks in PET bottles at 525 per minute.

The spiral has an elevation change from 15’-4” down to 6’-6” and will side transfer and decline the bottles at a speed of 180 FPM (this spiral has a top rated speed of 220 FPM). The spiral will be run in and tested with product at our manufacturing plant in Yorktown, Virginia, before it is dis-assembled and shipped to the west coast. Then one of our service technicians will assist the Sentry millwrights in the assembly and start-up.

The spiral is also pre-wired with NEMA 4x controls and is built as our new Hybrid stainless steel wash down construction. This option allows the end-user to perform a daily cleaning of the spiral. The nesting slats have the capacity to reliably end-transfer small cartons and packages or side-transfer small bottles or containers in a single file or in a continuous mass flow.  The spiral conveyors are equipped with our new 6” or 9” wide nesting slats which provide an efficient flat conveying surface without gaps.

This week we’re shipping one of our hybrid wash-down Narrow Trak Spirals to a food products company.

wash-down narrow trak spiralsThis model 1100-150 spiral will be used to incline packed cheese loafs about 6 feet to an overhead conveyor. The spiral will transfer 100 loaves per minute with the spiral running at 150 FPM.

Because the spiral will be installed in a wash-down area, the spiral is equipped with our new Solid Lube Bearings that are impervious to the cleaning solutions and methods used in food processing areas. The spiral is also outfitted with an automatic chain lube system that the customer will use to re-lube the drive chain after every cleaning event.

The Ryson Narrow Trak Spirals are great space savers with high throughput that can run at speeds in excess of 200 fpm. The Narrow Trak Spirals offer a significantly larger elevation change capacity than what is currently available in the small package marketplace. They are also a good alternative to side gripper conveyors because they can run at high speeds and do not need to be adjusted for varying product sizes.

Ryson offers two versions of stainless steel spirals that are suitable for wet environments. One has and all-stainless frame and structure. The other is a hybrid version where the center tube is our standard powder-coated aluminum construction and some of the components are zinc plated.

Both versions can be equipped with either regular stainless steel bearings suitable for wet environments or stainless steel bearings furnished with our proprietary solid lubricant for more aggressive wash-down environments. 

Wet Environments: Care should be taken when cleaning spirals with our regular stainless steel bearings. Strong detergents, foaming cleaners, alcohol based cleaners, detergent based transfer liquids and high pressure or high temperature cleaning liquids will, over time, dissolve the grease in the bearings and chain, resulting in reduced operating life of the bearings and chain assembly.

The conveying surface should only be cleaned with a mild cleaner and rinsed with a low temperature and low pressure water. For more information on Ryson cleaning procedures for wet environment spirals, refer to the Ryson Maintenance Manual.

Wash-down Environments: For more aggressive wash-down requirements, we recommend our stainless steel bearings with a new proprietary solid lubricant which is impervious to detergents, mild acids and bases.  These bearings have no seal and can run completely immersed in water at any temperature and still provide lubrication for the life of the bearings. Such spirals will also be equipped with an automatic oiler to re-lubricate the chain assembly after cleaning. 

Ryson Spiral Conveyors are designed to handle packaged goods. Our Spirals are not intended to be used in direct food contact applications and do not comply with all USDA / FDA sanitary design requirements.

Ryson solid lube bearings

Ryson introduces new proprietary solid lube bearings for wash-down applications.

Ryson’s new stainless steel wash-down bearings features an advanced proprietary solid lubricant, which is impervious to detergents, mild acids and bases. These bearings have no seals, can run completely immersed in liquids at any temperature and provide lubrication for the life of the bearings.

Standard stainless steel bearings have limitations. Strong detergents, foaming cleaners, detergent based transfer agents and high pressure or high temperature cleaning liquids will over time migrate past the bearing seals and eventuality dissolve the grease in standard bearings, resulting in reduced bearing life.

Standard stainless steel bearings are only suitable for for wet environments where the conveying surface can be cleaned with a mild cleaner and be rinsed with low temperature and low pressure water. We recommend the spiral run dry after cleaning.

Ryson Stainless Bucket ElevatorThis week we are shipping a stainless steel wash-down bucket elevator to a food processor in Texas. The unit handles shelled peanuts from the roaster to the processing lines at the rate of 5,000 pounds per hour. This is a totally enclosed bucket elevator with one inlet in three outlets that can be selectively operated.

This feature makes it possible for one bucket elevator to service three different processing lines. In fact, the last outlet is in a separate room and the horizontal section extends through a wall.

Ryson bucket elevators are designed for heavy-duty operation yet provide gentle product handling. They can be equipped multiple in and outlets. Pivoting buckets are overlapping at the inlets and can be selectively tipped at the outlets. The stainless steel option allows food product to be conveyed, complying with FDA standards.

This week we are shipping a tall stainless steel wash down hybrid spiral to a bakery in Minnesota. The spiral will handle frozen baked goods like baguettes and ciabatta breads.

Ryson Stainless Steel hybrid SpiralThe frozen products exit a spiral freezer at an 16′ – 0″ elevation. A new Ryson Spiral Conveyor transports the products down to a floor level packing line where they are bagged, checked and conveyed to a cartoning operation.

The spiral  has 7 1/4 counter-clockwise turns with a declination angle of less than 5 degrees which assures the products will not slide while declining. A special stainless steel slider plate facilitates smooth product transfer at the spiral’s in and out feeds. The stainless steel hybrid spiral models are made with a powder coated aluminum center tube. All Bearings are made of stainless steel suitable for wash down applications.
