Ryson Maintenance Training after installation is complete

Last week, our service department conducted Ryson Maintenance Training at a new project site for a large manufacturer of packaging materials.

The customer had ordered ten Model 1700-600 Spiral Conveyors. The spirals were installed at the end of ten production lines, conveying finished product up to overhead conveyors which flows to the palletizing area.

The customer also purchased the additional start-up training package we offer. Our technician, certified by PMMI’s training program, reviewed the preventive maintenance procedures and conducted a general product orientation with sixteen of the company’s maintenance staff.

Part of the start-up package includes checking for proper spiral integration and make any adjustments required to optimize performance and longevity. In this case, minor issues were quickly corrected by their controls team.

We consider these site visits to be a win-win. It is an opportunity for us to show off our commitment to customer service and will ultimately decrease our customers’ cost of ownership.

Modular Designs Aids a Quick Change: Tuesday afternoon we got an e-mail from the Project manager of a large consumer products company in Canada. They mistakenly specified the wrong spiral configuration. Unfortunately it was slated to start in a production line the following Tuesday.

On Wednesday, the Ryson service, engineering and parts departments got together and determined what would be needed to reconfigure the spiral on site and communicated the estimated costs to the Customer. On Thursday we received go- ahead from customer to proceed.

On Saturday our technician arrived on-site to reconfigure the spiral and assist in the installation in the new line. And on Monday, the spiral was ready for the line start-up.

Ryson Reconfigure

Ryson’s modular design allows us to reconfigure the spiral, often times on-site.

This example highlights two of our unique strengths in the market. One of the main features/benefits of our spirals is the modular design, allowing these kinds of quick modifications in the field. It makes re-purposing an existing spiral to conform to a new line layout a much easier and less expensive proposition. This customer has reconfigured a half dozen of their units in the last 5 years. The other Strength is that we are customer service based, and go to great lengths to assure customer satisfaction, and work with them to get exactly what they need. Our Parts and Service Departments work hand in hand to support the growing Ryson Spiral population in operation. Ryson is nearing it’s 21st year in operation and many of our early spirals are still in business. With the innovations over that time, it is sometimes challenging to identify the needed replacement parts.

Ryson Parts & Service PhotoMany of our Spirals have changed owners or have been moved to a different location. As an example, a few units have recently moved from an end user’s plants in California & Texas to a new facility they have opened in Georgia.

Many of our Spiral Conveyors have been reconfigured to meet our customers’ changing plant layout needs. Our spirals having the ability to be modified to different configurations – either in the field or here in our Yorktown plant – so we can help save costs for the end user by helping them re-use existing equipment in different ways. RYSON Parts & Service can help you evaluate options for modifying spirals whether it is just a change from an incline to a decline spiral or a whole new configuration.

Customers have been know to loose or misplace the Spiral operating manuals. Here is an example of an email that is becoming more common for us:

“Hello. I called earlier looking for some spare parts for our Ryson vertical conveyor. I could not find a name plate or parts number.  So, as requested, I have sent over some pictures in the hopes you can determine what model we have and then what parts I need. This spiral was purchased used but I have no other information.”

RYSON Parts & Service works with all our customers to come up with the best solution. With information from the customer like pictures of the parts, pictures of the spirals, pictures of the motors installed on the spiral, and information about the direction of travel we can give the customer basic recommended spare parts information, model number information, and a new operations manual for their spiral.

Another benefit of the close parts and service teamwork is that the parts department will alert the service department of any unusual or “red flag” parts requests. This prompts a follow-up because it often means the spirals have not been properly maintained or integrated.

We are here to help you. Please feel free to contact us with any questions you have by email, call or  on the form on our website.

Ryson Service = Old Ryson Ryson SpiralLast week one of our Ryson Service Techs was called in to do maintenance training for a spiral that was delivered  in 2000. The spiral has been in service at a medical test and development facility running a 24/7 operation and has never needed a service call from us. Over that time span, the customer only ordered additional friction inserts from our parts department, the most common wear-and tear replacement part.

The service technician was impressed with how well the spiral had held up over the years. Ryson spirals are reliable and designed for a long life. We always advocate that proper integration and preventative maintenance will greatly extend the life of the spirals ,which is quite evident in this case. It is always nice and rewarding to hear stories from the field like this, because it is a testament to the quality and longevity of our product.

If you would like more information on the suggested integration and maintenance, visit our website or download our literature. You can also read more stories about Ryson Service on our Blog.

ryson service tech - Annual Audits

Ryson Service Tech Marc Jaarsma connects an annual audit for a customer.

In the past few years, we are seeing a trend toward annual audits of our spirals by our end-users. They are scheduling routine visits by our technicians to inspect their machines and we will use the visit to train (or re-train) their maintenance and operations personnel on the use and preventive maintenance of the spiral conveyors.

As with other automated line equipment, it is not unusual for PLC and VFD settings for the spirals to get tampered with.  This results in interlocks being bypassed or “timed-out”, speed settings being mis-matched between the spiral and adjoining conveyors as well as other adjustments that result in premature wear and tear on the spiral conveyor’s chain-belt components.

We are also seeing immediate benefits for those that have implemented these annual audits. Our parts and service departments constantly monitor purchasing of replacement parts and are quick to pick up the phone and inquire about higher than normal parts usage. This typically comes back to the integration issues discussed above and that’s where these “check-ups” pay for themselves in increased up time and longer life.

Ryson Service Team installs a mass flow spiralLast week, Marc, from our service team visited a Ryson Project site, where our Integrator partner KHS USA, had installed a case spiral and the spiral pictured here, our model 2300-500 Mass Flow Spiral.

This spiral declines empty glass beer bottles 10 feet from a high level bulk depalletizer down to the filler floor at a brewery. Marc was on site checking the integration of the spirals and training the operations and maintenance folks on the proper operation and care of our machines.

This mass flow spiral is handling empty glass bottles (12 and 24 ounce) at a rate of 1,440 bottles per minute, day in and day out.

This model is capable of handling full bottles and cans at rates in excess of 2,000 per minute and has a 20” wide slat surface. For more information on Ryson’s Mass Flow Spiral Conveyors, please visit www.ryson.com, or download the product literature.

Ryson Repurposing Before and After

Ryson Repurposing: This week we’ll be shipping modification parts to a beverage plant in Illinois to reconfigure an existing Ryson Spiral Conveyor.

The original spiral was purchased in 2010 for a line that is no longer in use. Now, four years later they’ve asked us to reconfigure the spiral to replace an incline belt conveyor on another line, to save space. The field-transformation will take it from it’s current configuration with a 6 foot elevation change to a different configuration with an elevation change just over 9 feet.

The Ryson Spiral modular design allows customers to easily repurpose existing spirals at a fraction of the cost of a new spiral. No other spiral conveyor on the market can be field-reconfigured in this way. This demonstrates the versatility and unique benefits of the Ryson Spiral technology and how we help reduce the customers’ cost of ownership.

Once the parts arrive on site, one of our service technicians will travel to the site and can in most cases – with the help of the plant maintenance department – complete the transformation in a day. Read more stories on how Ryson has repurposed existing spiral conveyors.

Pars for Ryson Repurposing

This spiral will be extended, so a mast extension and additional needed parts are sent from our manufacturing facility to be assembled onsite.

Ryson Customer ServiceWe are committed to Ryson customer service. We believe that a superior product needs to be coupled with excellent customer service – before, during and after an order. Our engineering, sales and service teams work tirelessly to ensure our customers’ satisfaction, and knowledge of our product.

It is always gratifying to hear positive results from these efforts. This week we would like to highlight a few recent cudos.

Jeff did a great job yesterday. He shortened the chain on the shorter spiral first and did the taller spiral second with the L’Oreal maintenance guys. He was very professional and addressed all of the maintenance guys questions. I went through the training that he gave and I learned a lot myself. Jeff did such a good job that I could actually do this maintenance, and will tell you that I might have some problems with changing a bicycle chain if I had to. He also spent some time with our lead installer to give him some tips on how to install the Ryson “S”  curve that we need to install later. Jeff said that he was scheduled to be there today but I think we accomplished all that we had on the list yesterday so we released him yesterday at about 4 PM. “   Steven Wronski, Project Manager W&H Systems

“Let me congratulate you and your organization on your training programs and materials.  As a Polytron Certified Instructor and a PMMI Certified Trainer myself, and more importantly as a student of training by your company and many others, I can say that your training methods and materials are head and shoulders above what is typical for most equipment vendors. Thanks again and Keep up the great work.” Robert Kriner, Senior Technical Trainer, Polytron Certified Instructor, Polytron

“I wanted to reach out and thank your organization for the tremendous response to our breakdown…The breakdown, which was completely of our own doing, had put (our start time) in jeopardy. The quickness of your plan and willingness of your tech, Jason Fernandez, to rent a truck, load every part you thought we may have needed, to drive thru the night and start working as soon as he arrived allowed  us to have the spiral up and running by the end of the day Tuesday. We started production on Wednesday morning and we able to starting shipping the product on time…I personally want to thank you and Jason for going above and beyond to make this happen. Thanks again.” Michael Gaesser, Director of Packaging Innovation, NAbreweries
