Ryson Spiral for a Freezer EnvironmentRyson Spiral Conveyors can be configured to work in a freezer environment.

This week we’re shipping one of our model 1500-400 Spiral Conveyors to an Ice Cream Manufacturer that will be installed in a -20 degree freezer.

The Spiral will elevate sealed cartons of ice cream to an elevation of 13 feet at 150 FPM. In the photo, you’ll notice that the slats are blue. We use special proprietary slats that will not become brittle at subzero temperatures. The gearbox oil and freezer chain bearings are also special to handle those temperatures.

The spiral will ship in two sections, for ease of installation in the facility’s frozen storage area. One our Service Technicians will accompany the spiral to assist the millwrights on site in the re-assembly and start-up of the machine.

Frozen Foods Handling: Guacamole has quickly become one of the most popular condiments in the world – especially in the US – and the Yucatan Foods brand can be found in stores throughout the country.   The facility for Yucatan Food is located in the state of Guanajuato Mexico and its entire production of guacamole is for export to the US.   Their challenge was to bring the various sized tubs of guacamole from the top of the freezer at over 17ft high to the ground level in a small footprint so as not to encroach into the packaging area. When running at capacity, the freezer – which has a discharge width of over 1 meter – must transport as many as 200 tubs of frozen foods product per minute. To allow both large and small tubs to transition smoothly, Yucatan Foods chose the Ryson Mass Flow spiral with its lateral transfer design.

The freezer belt is running at approximately 10 fpm and by using a set of multi-speed transition belts, the Ryson Spiral, with a chain width of 16″ running at 50 fpm, conveys the load seamlessly and smoothly. As with many of our spiral in food production, Yucatan has opted to use the Ryson Hybrid design which is an economical solution for this type of application.

This month, Canadian Packaging Magazine did a feature story on a new Unilever Ice Cream Plant, combining cutting-edge production and packaging technology with uncompromising food safety requirements. Ryson Spirals were used.

The article is highlighting Unilever’s focus on food safety and their commitment to being an environmentally responsible operation.

This new facility has four Ryson Spiral Conveyors conveying several carton sizes and shrink wrapped ice cream tubs from floor level up to a 12 foot elevation where the products are conveyed to the end-of-line packaging operation.

Ryson Spirals need less floor space than conventional incline conveyors and are faster and more reliable than any elevator or lift. As the understanding of the benefits of the Ryson Vertical Conveying solutions grows, we see increased sales with our neighbors to the North and the South.

Ryson Freezer SpiralThis week we’re shipping a freezer spiral that will be used in a 0 degree environment transporting baking pans through a 12 foot elevation change.

Our Integrator Partner, Storcan Conveyors and Automation, is working with their client, a food manufacturer in Ontario, Canada to provide a compact solution for handling cases and pans in both the bakery operation and finished product packaging areas.

The powder coated color was chosen to set them apart in the various installation areas. The blue slats are our proprietary low temperature slats, and our freezer spirals can operate in environments as low as -40º F.

Ryson Freezer Spiral Conveyor

Ryson Spirals are often used to convey packaged products from the outfeed of a freezer at a high level down to the packaging floor. Since freezer spirals are commonly up to 48” wide, we lay out the spiral perpendicular to the spiral freezer and use a tapered ramp to gravity transfer the containers down onto the Ryson conveyor surface.

The spiral pictured is our all-stainless steel washdown unit with a 26” slat width and an elevation change over 15’. The gentle decline angle and additional friction inserts on the slats keep the product from sliding or re-orienting as it is transported to the packing station.

The Ryson space-saving spiral design is perfect for freezer applications. The Ryson space-saving spiral design is perfect for freezer applications.

This week we are shipping two spirals to a Canadian frozen food manufacturer. The spirals will be operating in a 0º F freezer environment.

Product will be conveyed overhead at a 12’ elevation from two separate packaging lines and spiraled down to a common robotic palletizer on the floor level.

The space saving benefit of the Ryson Spirals is especially beneficial in a freezer setting because floorspace is at a premium.

These spirals are specially prepared for freezer operations. The plastic parts are molded in a material that is suited for low temperatures, and are light blue to distinguish between ambient and freezer operations. The electrical components including the motor and all lubricants are rated for low temperature operation. The Ryson Freezer Spirals are designed to operate in temperatures down to -30º F.

Ryson Stainless Steel Spiral for Freezer ApplicationFreezer Application: Ryson Spirals are often used to convey frozen product from the top of a spiral freezer to the floor level.

On this project the customer needed to lower frozen single–serve dinners from a freezer out feed elevation of 18 feet down to the packaging level at floor level.

Because of space limitations, the product needed to enter the spiral perpendicular to the freezer out feed conveyor. This was accomplished by extending the in feed at the top and providing special designed stainless steel slides to facilitate transfers on and off the spiral conveyor.

This spiral unit is an all stainless steel/washdown model with 20” wide slats and is installed at a Midwest co-packer. Our Integrator partner, Selectpack was responsible for this project and was able to save the customer valuable floor space and provide them with additional operating flexibility.

The Ryson Spiral conveyor can be manufactured to operate in a Freezer environment down to -30 degrees. The spiral conveyor is a logical choice for declining frozen product to a robotic palletizer or downstream packaging line. When compared to other methods like belt declines and vertical case lowerators, the Ryson Spiral design is very reliable for this harsh freezer environment.  The blue slats are a proprietary compound developed by Ryson to operate in low temperatures and not be brittle.

Ryson Spiral Conveyors can be configured to operate effectively in freezer environments.

We recently shipped a special cold spiral for handling large tubs of Ice Cream in a freezer (minus 10 degrees F) at a large Ice Cream manufacturer in the Midwest by our Systems Integrator, Engineered Packaging Systems of Addison, Illinois. The above photo was taken in our manufacturing plant during testing prior to shipping. This spiral joins many other Ryson spirals in use in sub-zero environments across North America.

tall ryson Stainless wash-down SpiralA 22 foot tall stainless steel washdown Ryson Spiral Conveyor is in the process of being installed at a major food manufacturer in Michigan. The spiral is 8 1/4 turns and will convey single serve microwavable meals down from a spiral freezer in a single file to a packaging line at floor-level.

This application offers substantial savings compared to conventional spiral freezer methods. Products are conveyed down to floor level on the outside the freezer. This design allows the cost savings of both a smaller freezer and only having to use one up spiral freezer. Traditionally, a larger freezer would be required to house a a pair of the more expensive freezer spirals.

All Ryson Spiral Conveyors are made to order and are manufactured in a wide range of sizes and configurations. All our vertical conveyors can operate up and/or down in a clockwise or counterclockwise rotation. All Ryson Spirals are available in powder coated carbon steel, stainless steel, washdown, stainless hybrid and freezer versions.

The integrator on this project is Selectpack out of Michigan.
