The Ryson modular design enables a large degree of customization. This feature is what allows spirals to be built with various heights, pitches and speeds with few unique parts. This feature is also beneficial when modifications need to be made after the spiral is built.

Ryson Modular DesignThe following example is a real-world example of how this feature was used to save the day.

Wednesday night: We get a call about 6:00 pm from our integrator, who’s just stood up our new spiral at the end-user’s facility in Ohio.  The Integrator realized he’s made a mistake and mistakenly quoted and signed the approval drawings for a spiral with a discharge height of 12’-6”, when he really needed 10’-6”. The spiral was shipped complete with a full Nema 4X control system and the line was being installed, with line start-up just days away.

Thursday morning: Our service and engineering departments went to work and figured out how we could field-reconfigure the spiral to get his correct elevation. We overnight new recon details to the integrator on-site.

Friday morning: Our technician arrives at the facility and reconfigures the spiral and helps with the start-up of the spiral, while training the end-user’s maintenance staff.

This is a true story, no names were mentioned to protect a project engineer and save his reputation with his customer.

Last week we shipped four spirals for a unique application involving conveying loose rolls of paper towels.

Unique Application for Ryson Spiral

The cores will be parallel to the surface of the slats, something that is not commonly done on a spiral conveyor, making it a rather unique application. The 100% friction slats create a cleating affect that keeps the rolls centered on the chain as they are conveyed at 40 feet per minute. The spirals (2 up and 2 down) are our model 1200-300 with a 12” wide slat and an upper elevation of 12’.

The video below shows part of the product testing and factory acceptance test (FAT) we sent to the integrator. This is a service we provide for our customers. If someone has questions about how their product will work with a spiral, they can send us some test materials and we will videotape it running on a shop spiral similar to their required specifications. We can also videotape a spiral for a customer prior to shipping, in lieu of a personal visit, for a FAT inspection and highlight specific parts of their spiral.  This is an example of Ryson’s commitment to customer service and satisfaction.

This project was for our Integrator partner ProVantage Automation. For more information on the Ryson Spiral Conveyors, visit www.ryson.com, download the Ryson Vertical Conveying Brochure, or read more stories about Ryson Case Spiral applications on this blog.

One of the key benefits of the Ryson Spiral design is it’s modular design. One way this is beneficial is the ability to field modify if changes are needed in the future. Or as in this case, a last minute change.

Last week our Integrator Partner Systems Automated called us to request a last minute change to a spiral already being delivered a distribution warehouse in California. Due to a last minute layout change, they realized the spiral would need to change orientation. Going from a clockwise incline spiral conveyor to counter clockwise.

Ryson Spiral Modular Design

A Ryson service technician helps the installers reconfigure a spiral in the field.

Our engineering and service teams went to work to facilitate our technician’s visit with one part in his hand -all that he would need to turn the spiral “inside-out “ and get it ready to support the system start-up schedule. A few other guides will ship in a week to be added to the reconfigured spiral.

Start to finish, the entire reconfiguring process took only a few days without any project delays. This is another example of Ryson’s customer service and commitment to supporting our integrator partners.

Reconfiguring is a cost effective way to change your plant layout without purchasing a new spiral. And is another example of how Ryson can help lower your total cost of ownership. This is a key advantage with Ryson Spirals and is not nearly as feasible with our competitors. Visit www.ryson.com for more information, or read other reconfiguring stories in our blog.

spiral-from-floorChallenging Installations: One of the most appreciated attributes of the Ryson Spiral Conveyor is how easy they are to install. Most spirals ship in one piece – pre-assebled, pre-tested, drastically reducing the time and cost of installation.
We recently delivered spiral conveyors to two large consumer packaging companies having unusual installation requirements. These examples demonstrate Ryson’s ability and willingness to come up with solutions for some pretty interesting and challenging installations.

The first example is a 9 1/4 turn spiral 15 foot tall,  conveying loads from a mezzanine level to the first floor level. The spiral needed to go through a penetration in the floor and was shipped in two pieces to facilitate the installation in such tight quarters.

spiral-from-floor2The second spiral is also a down spiral 18 feet tall with 6 1/4 turns, conveying cartons from the second floor through a penetration in the floor. The spiral could not be supported from the below floor because there is machinery installed there. So the spiral had to be supported on a cradle hanging from the ceiling.

Theses are examples of Ryson’s customer service and our commitment to find viable solutions for our customers and integrator partners.

New Dedicated Test Area: Ryson has recently completed a factory floor reconfiguration. This move, allows us to optimize production flow and have more space for assembly and store parts. This process also freed up enough space to have a dedicated product testing area. This allows us to test all sorts of products on a variety of spiral models for prospective customers, without disrupting the functions of day-to-day manufacturing.

Ryson Dedicated Test Area

Product tests are very useful to our integrators, to assure the product they would like to convey will be handled effectively on our spirals, prior to submitting a proposal. They can send product samples, we video tape it and they can review it with their customers with the confidence that a Ryson Spiral would be perfect for the job.

This is another example of how Ryson is dedicated to customer service and satisfaction. For more information, please visit www.ryson.com.

flatbed 1800-650 Spiral Loading for Fast-Track OrderThis week we are starting to ship a fast-track order of 24 1800-650 model spirals to high-profile distribution centers in Illinois and Texas.

The 1800-650 model spirals are one of our widest models and usually require some disassembly to fit in a truck. However, with a tight installation deadline, the customer asked if there was any possibility of shipping them fully assembled in order to reduce installation time on-site. Our solution was to ship them on open step-bed trucks. This is not our common practice, but reflects our ability to come up with solutions for our customers.

We have also in the past done this for deliveries to locations that have no loading dock. Below you can watch how spirals are loaded on a open step-deck truck. For more information about Ryson loading and installation procedures, please visit www.ryson.com.

Ryson strives to provide the best customer service possible, and it is gratifying when we receive positive feedback from our customers. Below are a few examples of recent feedback which we would like to share.

Ryson Customer ServiceWhen our parts department took extraordinary measures to replace a faulty motor on a project ready to start up in New Foundland, Canada:

First let me thank you for your incredible support having the motor sent to BLH! This was very impressive and shows how committed you guys to the success of your integrators. Thank you! Jean-Martin Sovoie – Storcan Conveyor Systems and Automation

When a customer called at 4:55 PM on a Friday and needed replacement parts over the weekend due to an operational issue:

I want to make you aware that one of your employees provided extraordinary service in solving a last minute problem for our customer. Even though Fed-Ex and UPS had left for the day, He boxed the parts and arranged Air Freight to deliver the parts by  2:30 Saturday afternoon. By being proactive, he came up with a solution that ensured Smithfield’s operation would not suffer. Our special thanks goes out to Ryson. John Houk – Advanced Equipment Company.

When one of our technicians assisted during a critical installation of a 28’ tall spiral:

I just wanted to let you knw that FOTL was very impressed with Ryson’s service tech. He handled the situation brilliantly and was not fazed by the need to improvise a solution to stand up the spiral. I would like to thank you and the service tech for the efforts and support. Mark Sawalha – Envistacorp.

George Allen Campaigns at Ryson

This week Susan Allen visited Ryson while campaigning on behalf of her husband, the former Governor of Virginia. Susan listened to concerns about Washington’s policies and regulations from local business leaders on a tour of Ryson International, an innovative manufacturing company that specializes in energy-efficient bucket elevators and spiral conveyers. Ryson’s commitment to high levels of customer service and innovative products have made them the number one manufacturer of spiral conveyers in the country.

“We are proud that we manufacture our products in the U.S.A.” said Ole Rygh, President and CEO of Ryson International. “As a successful local manufacturing company, our team at Ryson understands how important it is for businesses to have the freedom to make decisions to innovate and grow without having to worry about the impact of burdensome policies and regulations from Washington.”  – he said as he conducted the tour of the Yorktown Manufacturing Facility. Ryson is a significant employer in York county.

Ryson Logo for Spanish Micro SiteRyson has enjoyed growth in the Latin American market recently and would like to recognize our international system integrators as a critical part to our success. To help bridge the gap and gain exposure, Ryson has created an all-spanish micro website with two reputable Latin American industrial publications: El Empaque and Reportero Industrial.

These sights are a great asset to Ryson International for two main reasons. The first is that it is a direct way to get Ryson exposure to the Latin segment. The microsite will also take on a support role to our existing customers and integrators, with complete product literature, integration guides and maintenance manuals in spanish. It will also help reinforce Ryson’s commitment to customer service and support.

If you or one of your customers need some Ryson information in Spanish, everything is available at ElEmpaque.com and ReporteoIndustrial.com It’s a great resource to download Ryson Spanish PDFs.
