Bag Handling Spirals: The Ryson Unit Load Spiral Conveyors are most widely used for cases and totes, but they are also well suited for bags and pails.

Bag Handling SpiralsThis week we’re highlighting a spiral that will be handling bags of Rice, ranging in weight from 25 to 100 lbs.

This 1600-500 model spiral, sold by our integrator Premier Tech, declines bags from an elevation of 16’ down to 10’ to a high level palletizer at a rate of 30 bags per minute. This spiral will be mounted on our extended leg support structure and was configured in a way not to interfere with the pallet dispensing system.

Ryson has much experience with conveying bags and sacks – everything from whey powder to kitty litter. If you would like more information about the Ryson Unit Load Spirals, visit our website, or read more application stories on our weekly blog.

We talk a lot about Ryson lower cost of ownership. The following is a real life illustration that our brand outlasts our competitor’s spirals and are far less expensive to maintain over their life.

Ryson lower cost of ownership - a 16 year old spiralA few weeks ago, an old 1600-500 Spiral was shipped back to our manufacturing plant to be repurposed. The spiral came from Kentucky. It was reconfigured in our manufacturing plant and is shipping to a new site in Colorado.

The spiral was originally built in 2002. All components and wear items were still in good operating condition sixteen years later.

The reconfiguration included changing the spiral from an inclining to a declining conveyor. A new type of transition rollers and adjustable guide rails were added to the infeed and outfeed sections.

This is a testament to the reliability and longevity of our spiral conveyors. It also highlights how an initial investment in a Ryson Spiral can over time reduce your total cost of ownership.

Ryson Spiral Benefits = Extended Infeed SpiralThis week Ryson is shipping a vertical conveyor that highlights some of the spiral benefits of our brand.
This Unit Load Spiral will be installed into a production line of a leading yogurt manufacturing company.  To save valuable aisle space on either side of the spiral’s diameter, the integrator specified the spiral constructed with a curved extended infeed which allows their production lines to be compacted, while providing the necessary aisle space between the lines for everyday operations.

To minimize implementation time once delivered, we also pre-wired the spiral with a motor disconnect (mounted at the base) and wired the two proximity switches (slack chain and motor overtorque safeties – standard on every Ryson Spiral) to a terminal box mounted on the center column.

This spiral is our 1600-500 model with a 20″ wide slat surface. It was specified in our Hybrid washdown finish, running at a speed of 120 feet per minute. Because it will be installed in an area with sloping floors it is also outfitted with swivel-style stainless steel legs.

Our Integrator partner for this project is Kaufman Engineered Systems. For more information on Ryson’s Spiral Conveyors, Visit www.ryson.com.

Ryson Spiral used for vertical indexing with totesVertical Indexing: This week Ryson will be shipping this 21 foot tall model 1600-500 spiral conveyor to Texas, where it will be used in a processing operation.

This spiral will be used to stage totes of granular material that will be elevated to a mixing operation on an adjacent mezzanine platform. Products are indexed forward in batches and the spiral produces a dynamic storage capable of holding up to 30 totes at any one time.

The  factory acceptance test (FAT) was conducted by the end user’s representative at Ryson’s manufacturing plant on Tuesday and was punctuated by loading (30) 50 lb. totes into the spiral in an indexing fashion, to simulate their operation at the plant.

Our integrator partner, Lonestar Automated Systems used our spiral conveyor in their layout instead of a vertical case elevator because of our reliability in the dusty environment where it will be installed.

The spiral was ordered with pre-wired controls, including a local jog station, that gives the maintenance staff local control of the spiral during maintenance. The machine was also specified to be reversible, giving the end-user even more flexibility in their operation.

Ryson Spirals Being Installed at Sweetwater Brewing in Atlanta

An old Ryson Show Spiral is now at new packaging line at Sweetwater Brewery in Atlanta

Sweetwater Brewery in Atlanta, GA is expanding their production and packaging lines. They came to Ryson for their vertical conveying requirements and we were able to offer them a sweet deal on one of our “retired” show demo spirals.

This red demo spiral had been to several trade shows and had been replaced by our new high capacity model. To fit thier application, Ryson shortened the 1600-500 (20″ wide slats) spiral 3 feet and changed the in feed and out feet tangents from a C to an A configuration. This is another example where the proprietary Ryson modular design made it cost effective to reconfigure and repurpose a spiral. Sweetwater Brewing also has two existing Ryson Case Spirals on the production floor. They anticipate all lines will be running by mid March.

Once the production lines are up and running, Ryson will send a technician down to assure that the spirals are running good and have been properly integrated with the adjoining conveyors. Read this Ryson Blog entry for more details on repurposing ryson spirals, or call our sales team at 757-898-1530.
