Space-saving Multiple Exit Spirals allow multi-level product flow, allowing loads to exit a spiral at intermediate elevations… all with a single footprint.

Multiple Exit Spirals: Exponential Space Savings. This is a perfect application for multi-level warehousing and pick module order picking operations. Loads are able to exit from  a single spiral at multiple elevations, saving valuable floorspace.

Ryson Spirals can also be configured to have loads enter the spiral at intermediate levels. Both options require a High Capacity or Wide Trak Spiral. The multiple entry and exit spirals are equipped with slats that have special rounded friction inserts. They provide just enough friction to prevent products from back sliding without preventing smooth side movement during induction or diverting out.

The specialized and proprietary Divert Out Conveyors have a pivoting arm which incorporates a powered face belt assuring proper product orientation when diverting out of the spiral.  The powered out feed conveyor is similar to the induction conveyor in that they have individually adjustable rollers that allows you to match the spiral pitch, assuring a reliable product transfer out of the spiral.

Integrated traffic controls are required for all Multiple Entry and Exit Spirals.  There are some limitations with regards to the placement (location) of these ancillary conveyors, and the throughput capacity may be reduced,  so we encourage you to contact the Ryson sales team for layout assistance early in your project.

This concept is also commonly used in applications where a single spiral is utilized for multiple production or packaging lines. The new Ryson Wide Trak Spiral Conveyor is in response to our customers’ need to handle bigger loads and reach higher elevations They can handle double the weight capacity of our regular Spirals and are ideal for warehousing and order picking operations.

Ryson Wide Trak Spirals

This week, we continue our string of the new Wide Trak Spiral Conveyor, with our model 3000-900’s. The overlapping slat width of 36” is just what the doctor ordered for our Integrator partner, Bastian Solutions.

Their customer, a large sporting goods retailer, needed to handle jumbo size cartons and called on us to employ 4 of these spirals in an expansion of their Distribution Center. These units have an elevation change of 21 feet and will run at 110 FPM.

Once assembled and tested in our Virginia facility, the spirals are partially dis-assembled and shipped to the project site, where our service technicians assist the Bastian Installation crew in the reassembly and start-up of these units.

Since getting into the “large spiral” business, we have come to the realization that there’s a great need for those warehouse/distribution applications to vertically transport larger and heavier cartons. This has been historically done with long stretches of incline or decline belt conveyors or with spirals made of belt curves, which have product size restrictions and we get a lot of negative feedback regarding belt replacement and general maintenance headaches.

The Ryson Wide Trak Spiral can add line compatibility in applications where different sized products are conveyed. The Ryson Wide Trak Spiral can add line compatibility in applications where different sized products are conveyed.

A perfect example is this spiral that was recently installed for a frozen pizza manufacturer. The pizzas are presented to our 30” wide slat surface either single file (for the large pies) or two-abreast (for the smaller ones). A simple diverter at the discharge conveyor directs them to the correct exit route, based on which size they are running at the time.

We specified our new Wide Trak model 2200-760 to accept over-wrapped pizzas from the freezer discharge, down nine feet to the packaging line. We see a great deal of applications where there’s a need to decline from a spiral freezer.

This Wide Trak was built in our hybrid stainless steel version. The spiral runs between 150 and 200 FPM and has an optional inside guide rail.

Next week we ship this special Wide Trak Spiral to a food manufacturer in the Midwest. It is designed to operate in a wet environment.

Stainless Steel Wide Trak Spiral to Operate in Wet EnvironmentThis spiral is the stainless steel version of our new Wide Trak model 2200-760. It features a 30” wide slat surface and stainless steel bearings, which allows it to operate in a wet environment.

The spiral is a incline conveyor, elevating frozen wrapped pizzas from a spiral freezer discharge at 3’-0” up to mezzanine packaging operation at a 12′ – 0″. The pizzas run single file or two abreast at rates up to 120 per minute. The Ryson Wide Trak Spiral models feature either a 30” or 36” wide conveying surface. This model spiral is perfect for this kind of freezer application.

The spiral will be shipped partially disassembled so that the largest sections can fit through passageways and under the newly installed drop ceiling in the installation area. The spiral will be re-assembled on site by one of our experienced service technicians, along with the on-site installers.

Modex 2018 logoThis week Ryson is exhibiting at Modex 2018 in Atlanta.

This show is our biggest show to reach our logistics, warehousing and distribution industry customers and integrators.

We are running our new Wide Trak Spiral Conveyor in our booth. This spiral can have a slat width of up to 36 inches. It is in our family of High Capacity Spirals that can optionally be configured with our proprietary induction and divert-out conveyors that allow loads to enter or exit the spiral at intermediate elevations. This is a clear space-savings advantage for companies that have multi-tiered product flow.

The multiple entry ability is most often utilized in two main areas:

In the manufacturing and packaging market, an induction conveyor is typically installed at ground level, near the Spiral’s infeed. This configuration simply allows flow from separate production lines to feed a single spiral.

In the distribution and warehousing industry it is most often used to feed materials from a multi-tiered mezzanine onto a single spiral. (see drawing on left). This is an ideal application and an efficient use of space when compared to traditional methods.

MODEX provides attendees access to the latest manufacturing and supply chain equipment and technologies. MODEX 2018 will be held April 9-12, 2018 in the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta, GA.

The Ryson Wide Trak Spirals with Induction Conveyor options are getting attention at distribution centers. The wide trak spiral boasts our widest slat width and can reach elevations up to 50′. It is ideal for a multi-tiered order picking modules or warehouses.

Wide Trak Spirals With Induction Conveyor

This week we are building two (2) identical Wide Trak Spirals with induction conveyors that will be shipped to a major footwear designer and distributor on the west coast for our Integrator Partner, Honeywell Intelligrated.

The spiral model 2200-760 is elevating open cases 18’. Both the spirals will be supplied by two different production lines , with one at the ground level and a second one at an elevation of 13’ feet. This intermediate elevation will utilize our new induction conveyors.

The new induction conveyor powered roller design is individually adjustable to match the spiral pitch, assuring a safe and reliable product transfer. The spirals will run at 200 feet per minute.

The Ryson Wide Trak Spiral Conveyors are perfect for such an application due to the size of the products,  the largest being 32″x24″x30″ along with their high capacity and throughput capabilities.

The 30″ wide conveying surface is ideal for larger items as well as boxes/totes of varying sizes, which is common order fulfillment operations. The induction conveyor configuration allows loads to enter the spiral at intermediate elevations, allowing for example load entry at all levels of a mezzanine into a single spiral. This ability drastically reduces the footprint needed for vertical conveying.

The core Ryson concept is to vertically convey using minimum floorspace. Although the concept is simple, it can be used in countless applications.

Ryson Concept Vertical ConveyingThe Ryson Concept has two main kinds of spirals. A Unit Load Type, and a Mass Flow Type. The unit load Spiral Conveyors smoothly handle boxes, totes, trays and cases and the Mass Flow Spirals convey materials such as cans, bottles and jars in bulk mass. They both come in standard capacity and high capacity – for applications that require extra throughput, weight handling or elevation change. The High Capacity Spirals can optionally be equipped with intermediate infeed or discharge locations, ideal for multi tiered order picking applications.

Much of ryson’s business is in two main categories: Packaging /food & beverage / personal care products and warehousing / oder picking / distribution. Because of the diversity of applications, Ryson has developed several standard slat widths and each model’s footprint size is based on that.
